This song is grounded in a specific Middle Eastern Tombak rhythm, called "evfer." It's a complicated 9/8 rhythm that I've redone to fit into (I should say bowdlerized) a 4/4 piece. I started with this Tombak rhythm, with the idea in mind that I would couple it with a specific instrument. That instrument turned out to be a Persian Santoor. The rest of this piece grew from the connection between these two instruments. (By the way, the person in the photo is a woman, not a man, getting ready for battle.)
